Rough Day With Athan.

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

Yesterday has been one of the roughest day we had with Athan, I would say.  The boy seemed to have woken up on the wrong side of the bed.

He and Calvin stayed over at grandma’s the night before and early morning when I went to pick Calvin for his swimming lesson, I have already heard a few incidents where Mr A had thrown massive tantrums and *bullied* his brother and cousin (both older than him!). When I returned with Calvin after swimming, I witnessed how BAD my little guy was behaving. He wanted to do EVERYTHING that the older kids were doing and when he couldn’t, he screamed his lungs out. Not only that, when he was given what he wanted in the first place, he threw it on the floor.  He even hit his brother. I was quite surprised by his actions as he seldom behaved this way, but I told myself to be firm with him.  It was a tricky situation because he has been sick the whole week and he was still coughing and sniffing yesterday.  I did think I should not be too harsh on him. BUT. I thought that should not be an excuse of bad behaviour. So, appropriate discipline was implemented everytime he did something unacceptable.

When it was nap time, he absolutely refused to go to bed.  He screamed so loud that I could feel my headache coming! His eyes were only half opened and yet he still wanted to protest! I really was at my wits’ end and Robin had to take over.  Mr A was warned and in the end, Robin had to lock the door and let the boy cry himself to sleep. He did. For 2 hours.

He seemed to be happier after a good nap, well, at least he could play better with his brother — without fighting every 1 minute. Then came bed time. He refused to sleep in his own bed and insisted on sleeping on Calvin’s bed! He did not budge after repeated explanation and warning, and so, it was back to locking him in the room and letting him cry it out.  Poor Calvin had to sleep outside for a while ….. Robin went in a few times to see if he was really to listen and *repent*.  After about half and hour, Mr A decided to admit defeat and was happy to sleep in his own bed. And, he asked for Calvin — he wanted to sleep with his “gor gor” (big brother).  *sigh*

I was so tired at the end of the day.   I think Mr A was very tired too.  It was absolutely draining to have to deal with  tantrum after tantrum. Thank God that Robin was home and was helping out.  Robin reminded me Calvin went through similar experience when he was about this age too — so I shouldn’t be surprised.  Good news is, MR A seemed to be a lot calmer this morning.  He is happier too. Thank God.

My little guy is probably going through a phase or he had a bad day yesterday. Whatever it is, I think the important thing is to be there for him and to be consistent in the way we discipline him.  It’s a lot of work!

Sick Sick Sick.

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Everyone at my home is sick at the moment, including the husband who seems to have the worst symptoms. He has the flu — quite a bad one that comes with fever, body aches, block nose and cough — the whole package. Calvin has a cold and a little fever, but he is holding up quite well, although he has been waking  up couple of times at night due to blocked nose.  Athan has a cough and a cold.  His voice is very hoarse at the moment and the blocked nose is also waking him up couple of times a night.  I have to take care of the 3 of them as I am the only one who is not sick — for now, at least!

I am tired. Lack of sleep. Lots of work at office and at home.  I wish the end of the week can come faster — hopefully by then they feel better and I can have a break. I hope I don’t catch the bug. *fingers crossed*

Rain — Finally!

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

The long awaited rain has finally arrived — with a vengeance!  Today has been a very cold, wet and windy day.  Typical winter weather.  There was a *mini* hail storm this morning too.  The boys and I were watching the wind and rain from inside the house and all of a sudden, we saw little pellets of ice falling from the sky instead of rain.  The boys just stood there and watched in silence and then the questioning started. 🙂

We felt safe to be in the house in weather like this. Thank God for keeping our house safe.  We have heard many cases of power failure and flying roof tops and falling trees on houses …..

The other good thing about having such heavy rain is that the car get washed! The exterior of my car looks pretty good at the moment, thanks to the rain.  However, the interior still needs lots of work!

Read To Me!

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

It was after day care for the boys and as usual, they were demanding and clingy (esp. Athan).  I was in a hurry to get dinner ready, but I reminded myself to slow down.  I sat with the boys and read one of their favourite books “The Incredible Book Eating Boy” by Oliver Jeffers with them.  It worked. The two monkeys seemed content and happy enough to play by themselves — at least for a while.

I was preparing dinner and in less than 5 minutes, I could hear someone crying …. *sigh*.  Such times can be stressful, especially if Robin was not home yet and I am in the middle of cooking.  I tend to leave them to resolve their conflict but it doesn’t work all the time and I have to mediate.

Athan came running to me crying and said he wanted me to read the book with him again. I was going to say “no” to him until I thought of an idea.  I suggested Calvin to read to Athan! I didn’t think Calvin would, but he surprised me.  He took Athan by the hand like a big brother, sat him down and began reading — in his own way and in the way he remembered the story — to his little brother.  I managed to capture the moment:

How sweet.

Weekend Boys.

The boys having their afternoon snack.  This is probably the only time when two of them can sit quietly side by side … 🙂

Backyard Project Update.

Friday, May 15th, 2009

Hey look! The seeds we planted some weeks ago are budding!!  The boys were so excited to see new shoots sprouting from the seeds. Looks like we’ve got ourselves some “baby” coriander and “baby” chives! How exciting.

However.

We also found some holes in the soil — seems like *someone* has been poking its beak into the pot to look for seeds. That explains the “sparseness” of the growth of the herbs.  Some seeds have been eaten by the birds, I think . Oh well, at least we still have some herbs left for our consumption.  Well done to the boys!

Boys’ Fun.

This is a typical scene of the boys playing with their father.  They like to sit on Robin and “immobilise” him!

This is the boys playing xbox game with the father. Athan tries really hard to have his hand on the control while Calvin wants it all to himself!  What did the father do? Nothing! He just let them press the buttons at random — anyway, it is their game!

Powerful Part II.

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

At our dinner table today, I asked Calvin “How did God make everything”? To which I received a blank look and a soft “I don’t know ….”. Gee… the boy seemed to have forgotten our conversation in the car just 2 days ago! Either that or he is too pre-occupied with his dinner.  I reminded him the word “powerful” and Robin gently prompted him to express what he thought the word meant.  This is what he said to us:

“Um, if the monster break our house into pieces, God can fix it! Powerful is very very strong, ma ma.”

Robin and I exchanged a smile.

So, to our 4.5 year old, he has a God who is strong enough to fix our house if it is broken — by a monster. I think that’s the concept he has of strength at this stage.  By the way, I should share that in Calvin’s imaginary world, there are monsters and dinosaurs which are very big, very strong and very scary. Perhaps his articulation of “powerful” is a demonstration that he knows God is stronger than those “monsters”.  I certainly hope so.

Powerful.

On our way home from church yesterday, Calvin asked a very interesting question. He asked “How did God make everything, mum?”  I was of course taken aback by his question, but I knew I had to try  my best to give him an answer that was correct as well as simple enough for him to understand.  Before I could say anything, Robin said “God has the power to  make all things, Calvin”. Then Calvin said “Yeah, God is powerful!”.  I asked if he learned about God’s power at Sunday School, and he nodded. I don’t think he fully understand the meaning of “power”, at this stage but I think to him, God is very big and strong, one who can make all things.  So, our boy has learned something new about God as well as a new word — powerful.

Athan, who was sitting next to Calvin at the back of the car, has been listening to our conversation and he kept repeating the word “powful” (powerful) all the way home. 🙂
