Haircut.

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

These 3 had a haircut yesterday.  Robin literally *begged* me to cut his hair as his hair was getting to an unbearable and annoying state (for him) and he did not want to pay the barber (because he thinks they are over-charging).  Well, I have been cutting his hair for the past months, but sad to say, I am still not confident and definitely not good enough by my own standard.  Nevertheless, the man said he did not mind and he’d rather I cut his hair.  Worst case scenario was to shaved him bald!  He was even happy with that!

Calvin had a cut too.  Robin and I took turns — he did the clipping while I used the scissors.  The boy did not cry or create a drama, but he was restless and kept moving his head.  It was diffcult to make a uniform cut and so you could probably see in the picture above, his hair was pretty uneven cut!  Anyway, he seemed happy with his lighter head. 🙂

Athan was DIFFICULT.  He screamed and screamed and screamed throughout the whole cut.  I had to hold his head down very firmly while Robin used the clippers. I guessed all that pressure on his little head did not help.  We were prepared for his violent protest and so we just kept quiet and get the job done because no amount of comfort could appease him.  I was just afraid that the neighbours thought the boy was in trouble!

Bobtail Lizard.

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

Robin found a bobtail lizard sun basking on the fence outside our house this afternoon.  He was so excited and brought it into the house to show us!  The boys and I were taken aback when we saw the reptile.  Both boys did not want to be near it but the father kept showing it to them. Oh, have I mentioned before that Mr Robin Teo has a soft spot for bobtail lizards?  He finds them cute!

The boys were pursuaded to take a closer look at the lizard, and somehow their  initial fear disappeared and it has turned into curiosity. The father even let them touch the lizard while he was holding it.

Guess what?  The husband wants to keep the lizard for a few days as his pet before he releases it into the wild!  Can you believe him? *sigh*

Immunised.

Friday, November 28th, 2008

I finally brought Calvin to get his 4-year-old needles done today.  We have been putting it off since he turned 4 as the boy has been protesting and we were slack … 🙂

I started to prep the boy yesterday, telling him that he has to be immunised — that is, 2 needles, one on each arm.  Of course he was *horrified* and refused.  But I told him he needed the needles in order to go to the *big school* and that I would reward him with a lollipop afterwards.  That seemed to calm him a little.

So, after his kindy today, I brought him to the clinic, armed with a lollipop. He was still protesting and said that he did not need the needles as he was not sick!  I was quite firm with him and I think that helped. He was actually quite well behaved at the clinic given that we had to wait for more than 30 minutes!!!

When his turn finally came, Calvin happily showed the nurse his lollipop before he put it in his mouth — and before he knew it, the nurse had poked the first needle into his arm.  There was not a sound. He whinged a little at the second shot, but he did not cry or scream.  That was it.  No drama. Thanks to the lollipop!  The nurse even gave him a balloon and told him that he could now go to the *big school*. That has made the boy very happy.

Upside Down Boys.

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

These 2 monkeys have been playing quite well of late.  Athan happily follows Calvin everywhere and copies his brother’s style of playing and speech.  Calvin, on the other hand is enjoying the company and being able to *boss* his brother around.

Gallery Visit.

Friday, November 21st, 2008

One of afternoon activities during the conference was a social/recreational one. I chose a visit to a local art gallery.

The building was an old church that has been restored to its natural beauty.  In fact, the chapel and a *sample cell* (where the nun lived) were still inside.  The gallery even had a function hall where weddings or social functions could be held.  The art pieces that were on display were mostly oil paintings of landscape and they were all very beautiful.   And, the garden around the church — what can I say?   It was simply BEAUTIFUL.

We had a walk around the very well maintained garden after afternoon tea(yup, we had yummy scones with jam and cream for afternoon tea at the gallery!).  How I wished Robin and the boys were with me.  I’m pretty sure they would enjoy the gallery as much as I did. Oh well, maybe next time.

Away.

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

Just a quick post to say that I will be away for a work conference in Melbourne from today till Friday. I shall endeavour to post again when I return. The boys will be taken care by their father and grandma.  I miss them already!

Diwali.

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

We were invited to a Diwali celebration (also known as Deepavali — it is like Chinese New Year celebration for the Chinese) this evening by our new indian friends — thanks to Calvin!  See, Calvin acquainted a little indian boy at his day care some time ago and they became great friends, and we got to know the boy’s parents as well.  Unfortunately, the boy’s family had to move to another suburb and he has since stopped attending the day care. However, we kept in contact with his family and so we got the invitation.

The whole house was decorated with lights and vibrant colours – the mood of celebration was definitely there.  The hosts were all dressed in their traditional outfits which were very colourful too. I was very impressed, I must say. I felt a little under dressed too! Our friends made us very comfortable and even gave us a little tour of their new home.  It was a very beautiful home.

Calvin was very excited to see his friend again.  The moment the two boys saw each other, they started playing — cars.  The way they played was so “scarily” similar.  No wonder they get along so well. Athan, as usual wanted to join in but was turned away as he was too young to play at their level. Poor little fellow.  Anyhow, he was happy roaming around the huge house, from room to room and from front to back.  Robin and I had to take turns to patrol him just in case he got himself into trouble.

Oh, I must add that the food was excellent!  I love indian food despite it being hot and spicy and even though I sweat and tear after eating the food! It is all worth it. 🙂

Calvin almost did not want to leave his little friend when it was time to go.  He wanted to stay! The only way to get him to the door was a promise that he could come visit again — soon. Sigh.

Meet The Parents.

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

I managed to make it to the parents meeting at Calvin’s school this morning.  I wasn’t going to go as I had 2 meetings this morning and I have arranged for Robin to go instead.  HOWEVER. Things happened last minute — he could not make it and so I had to try to make it — some how.  The parents’ meeting was not compulsory, but I thought it was important to go and meet the teachers and principals as well as for them to meet us. And so, I went.

The teachers were all very experienced.  They have been working in the school for the many many years and were all early childhood educators.  Not only were they experienced, they were also very passionate about their work.  I liked that.  Calvin’s teacher seemed very friendly and patient — my observation, anyway. She strongly encouraged parents’ involvement and wanted us to go on a roster to help out in the class at least once every term.

I managed to talk briefly to some other parents who were there before I had to rush off for my meeting. I felt good  as I left the school.  It was all very positive.  Calvin should be in good hands — that’s all that mattered. I sure hope that his current experience at the 3-year-old kindy will help him to adjust well to his new learning environment.

My Two Little Monkeys.

Sunday, November 9th, 2008

The Elmo tent that Calvin got for his birthday has become the boys’ latest favourite toy at play time.  They would go in and out of the tent like playing hide and seek or Athan would throw in all his favourite stuff toys and sit in there with them (while sucking his thumb) or Calvin would pretend play to be me or his dad, telling Athan off or telling him what he should do…. the tent actually provides quite good entertainment for the two boys.

These two monkeys have been playing a lot more recently which also means there’s a lot more fighting and crying! Although, I have to add that they are playing well together — well, better than before.  Athan is copying Calvin in almost everything, especially in speech and so we have seen some good progress in his speech recently.  He has been trying to talk in short sentences made of three words, e.g “ba ba he shui” (pa pa drinks water) and he is also into saying “NO” these days. He has a mind of his own that is almost always opposite of what I want him to do.  He throws tantrums when not given his way, but his tantrums are short-lived — about 10 – 20 seconds.  One thing remains the same — he is still loud and fierce when upset.  🙂

Athan is an easy going little boy.  He is easily appeased (for now), especially with food bribes.  He loves to eat and drinks water.  He can finish his whole bottle of drink (250ml) at one go if no one stops him.Oh, another thing about Athan — he loves to look at worms and bugs and he also loves touching them!

Calvin is bilingual at the moment — English and Mandarin.  He switches from one language to another quickly depending on who he is talking to.  However, his English sentences are not that complete and he struggles for the right words sometimes.  Even so,  I am glad that he is not confused by the two languages and can speak both languages quite confidently.  He is very easily distracted when it comes to sitting down to learn how to write or draw.  He will just hold his pencil and doodle something and say “finish!” and ask to play.  This is probably a typical boy’s attitude.  Anyway, I think he still learn something through his play time — depends on what he plays with.  He loves to build and fix things.  He can amuse himself for a long time with a set of blocks building all sorts of things — without his brother’s interruption.

Calvin loves going to his kindy classes.  He looks forward to going to his school every Friday morning and when I ask  him whether he’d rather stay at home with me, his answer is always “no”.  I know I’m silly to ask such a question but I just want to see his reaction. I can truly say that he is enjoying kindy and his friends.  They are having a pirate theme this term and so each week he brings home something pirate-ty. Last week, he brought home a treasure box. So interesting.

Both boys love playing with their dad.  They get very physical when they play e.g wrestle on the floor.  It seems very natural for them to play this way.  I know Robin is very keen to teach them martial arts, but they are still too young.  We’ll see who has the interest to learn.

Robin and I always talk about the boys at the end of the day, and he always say to me “they are growing up so quickly and soon they will lose all their cuteness, so enjoy them while it lasts!”.  He is right.
