3 Today!

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

Calvin turns 3 today! He has had a great day today.

Early in the morning, he received a phone call from his best friend, Alison wishing him a happy birthday. Again, these 2 spoke in their own language which only they could understand. 🙂 Then there was another phone call from his favourite cousin, Serene in Singapore. And then, there were 2 cards in the mail and a huge parcel for him at our doorstep. It was from Singapore, from my family. In it were lots of books and toys. A BIG thank you to all of you who have sent your well wishes and presents!

After all the excitement, Calvin was off to day care as it’s Tuesday today. I was told that he was all smiles today. His kinda dance teacher wrote in his progress report that he is a quiet and sweet boy, a very observant child and he tries very hard in class. His favourite dance is the “hokey pokey” and he loves to play with the musical instruments. His hands and legs coordination is improving and he is part of the Christmas performance! I can’t wait to see my boy perform. 🙂

Robin and I have been really slack when it comes to organising a birthday party for Calvin. But, over the weekend we met up with Flora and Li-On and their girls for lunch and I took the chance to celebrate Calvin’s birthday with them. I bought a little cake (strawberry, chosen by Calvin) and after lunch, we sang birthday songs and both Alison and Calvin took turns to blew the candle. I think that’s the highlight besides eating the cake. 🙂

There’s another celebration today — at grandma’s home. Robin’s mum and aunt cooked a really scrumptious meal for dinner tonight. There was so much food. There were noodles, drumsticks, red eggs … all Calvin’s favourite food. And, there was another strawberry cake. Calvin was very excited when he saw the cake and he was so ready to blow the candles. He even sang the birthday song for himself! This boy really loves eating cake. The way he eats the cake makes it look so delicious.

When we got home after dinner and cake, Calvin was off to play with his new toys. Robin bought him a “Lightning McQueen” (from the animation “Cars” by Pixar) toy car that *talks* and moves after a good shake. Calvin was so fascinated by it. I also took out the car set from his parcel and let him had a play with it. He was absolutely intrigued by how the cars raced down the tracks and went through the tunnel and went over the bridge. I think he likes the *racing* part best. I believe he will be entertained by his new toys for quite a while.

It has been an amazing 3 years watching Calvin grow. He is such a happy boy and is very funny in his own ways. He makes us laugh. His vocabulary in both English and Mandarin has expanded so much this year. He talks in sentences and we find that we can actually reason with him. The challenge is of course, he knows how to answer back when he is being disciplined.

Calvin is very blessed to have so many people who love him. We thank God for all of you!

Who’s Who?

Can you tell them apart? I’m sure you can. 🙂

Bedtime Boys.

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

These 2 were protesting at bedtime last night and I ended up putting them together on Calvin’s bed. Calvin teased his little brother and the baby loved it. He was kicking his legs and flapping his arms the whole time. I put them back to their respective beds 15 minutes later, and surprisingly, they were happy to go to sleep — without a sound.

Many friends have commented that Athan is looking more and more like Calvin although there are some who disagree. I can’t really tell because I see them everyday. You be the judge. 🙂

Talking On The Phone.

Friday, October 19th, 2007

This is Calvin talking to his good friend, Alison over the phone this morning. Of late, these 2 have been fighting to get hold of the phone to talk to each other whenever Flora and I are talking on the phone. We used to just let them say a few words and then get them to say “bye”, and continue our conversation. But now, their *conversation* is getting longer and it is getting harder to get the phone back! I have no idea what Calvin is telling Alison because a large part of it is babbling. However, when I look at him, he definitely looks like (and also sounds like) he is having a real conversation. 🙂

Walk With The Boys.

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

Now that spring has sprung and the weather is warmer, I have been taking the boys out for walks in the late afternoon. It is a good thing to get out of the house at this time of the day because everyone is cranky, including me.:)

Both Calvin and Athan enjoy the walks. Calvin is very chatty throughout the whole walk. He talks about everything he sees, especially the cars that pass by. He would stop, point to the car, shout out its colour and watch it zoom past us before he could continue with the walk. If a truck or 4 wheel-drive or any big vehicle came by, he goes “look mama, big wheels!” (in English). He also likes to stop and pick up honky nuts and dried up branches along the way — he says those are for the birds. 🙂 He also likes to play little games with me during our walk. He would get me to chase after him or he would call out “stop” and “go” — yup, I am supposed to follow instructions. I don’t mind playing along with him as long as it is safe to do so, and what more? It makes the walk more interesting.

As for little Athan, he loves to go out. He loves to look at his surroundings and he flaps and kicks his little legs in excitement whenever he sees his big brother laughing and running.

And me. I enjoy my time with the boys. I don’t have to deal with the crankiness and I get to exercise. How good is that? By the time we reach home, it is usually time for dinner and then bedtime routine for the boys starts. It just makes things easier for me.

What we need to do is to get Robin to come with us one day. He is usually stuck at home and working away infront of his machines. I think the walk will do him good.

Good Reminder.

Sunday, October 14th, 2007

Everyone needs a good reminder once in a while, I reckon.

I was talking to a lady after church service this morning, and after our conversation I felt ashamed, in a way, but I was encouraged at the same time. Well, she was commenting on how cute Athan was and then she started asking how I was coping with the 2 boys and without hesitation I said “it’s a lot of work!” She paused and looked at me (slightly surprised) and said very calmly to me “but it’s very rewarding”. She’s right.

I have to admit that my first thoughts about my boys is always that they are a lot of work. Yes, they really are. But I have forgotten that the time and effort I invest in them is indeed rewarding and definitely worth it. I should remember to enjoy my time with the boys.

Calvin’s Prayer.

Friday, October 12th, 2007

We have been told to keep praying with our boys because they will learn from our prayers. How true.

At dinner today, Calvin said his own prayer — for the first time. He usually wants me to do the praying. This is his prayer (all in English):

Dear God, thank you for my dinner. Thank you for papa, for didi(athan) and for mama! Amen.

I was so pleasantly surprised to hear Calvin pray. Robin could hear it from his work desk too. He too, was very pleased to hear our boy pray. It’s a very rewarding experience, I must say. Got to keep praying.

Starting Young.

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

This is Calvin playing a XBOX game known as “burn-out 3” with his father. He calls it “crash” because there is a lot of crashing of cars in the game. He will say to his dad “papa wan crash” (papa play crash) whenever he sees that Robin has a moment to spare. By the way, Robin is the one who introduces this game to Calvin ….. and so perhaps he is to blame for Calvin’s *addiction* ? 🙂

Another Photo Post.

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

This is another picture taken during our recent trip. We were at the beach at Guilderton on a rather cold day despite the presence of the sun. The wind was very strong and cold, and to keep Athan warm, Robin had him all wrapped up in his jacket. BUT, all our baby wanted to do was to chomp on the zipper! 🙂 Calvin, as you can see in the background of the picture, was getting impatient and wanted to leave the beach because he did not like the cold wind.
