The Boys.

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

They are actually sitting on their father’s back in the photo above. It was after dinner, a usually fun and happy time for the boys.  Athan, in particular, is usually cranky before dinner and once he his tummy is full, he seems a lot happier and also “naughtier”. :)  Robin usually spends that time with the boys while I clean up the mess.  Well, the boys naturally go to him for play or wrestle …. so I just leave them be and do my chores in peace. 🙂

Athan.  This little man began to show symptoms of a cough and cold over the weekend.  The cough gets worse at night.  Last night was a bad night — he coughed very frequently and the cough was very phlegmy.  At some stage, I could hear wheezing as well.  Poor fellow.  I wasn’t able to sleep well as I seemed to be instinctively waking up to hear if he were coughing.  He did not cry though …. thank God.  He is still coughing today and has a little fever too.  So we kept him at home.  Hope he gets well soon.

Calvin. Started Term 3 of kindy since last week.  He has been well, thank God.  He has been learning a lot of new words lately which is good. Before bedtime last night, he said to me “when I am naughty and try to hide, God will find me.” I was pleased to hear that from him because it showed that he has learnt something from our daily dose of the children catechism booklet.  See, we have been going through the questions and one of them was “Where is God?” The answer is “God is everywhere.” Following on from that was “Can you hide from God?” The answer is “No”.  Calvin seems to be able to piece what he has learn together — that because God is everywhere, one can’t hide from God. I guess this is a like a direct application for him because whenever he is disobedient, he tries to hide, especially to escape discipline …. and now he knows that although he can hide from me or his dad, he can’t hide from God.

Encouraged.

I was catching up with a friend on the phone this afternoon.  We talked about a number of things — from church to kids to work to cooking etc. And then. I mentioned to her the things that I struggled with constantly.

I struggled with the fact that I am only a 50% mum to the boys and 50% worker at work.  I can’t seem to do well in anything.  I am frustrated at times. Then she said to me “well, for the rest of the percentage, God will send His blessings”. That has really impressed me. I have never thought of my own situation in this way. I only see the negative. She continued to say that I have good boys and that’s evident of God’s blessing.  Wow. That has definitely set me thinking, thinking about how God has put me in my current circumstance and how He has really blessed me despite my shortcomings. I really have forgotten God’s goodness towards me.

Thank you, my friend, for reminding me God’s faithfulness and goodness.  I am encouraged.

A Hymn To Share.

We Plough The Fields And Scatter
(Matthias Claudius, 1740 – 1815)

We plough the fields and scatter
The good seed on the land,
But it is fed and watered
By God’s almighty hand:
He sends the snow in winter,
The warmth to swell the grain,
The breezes and the sunshine,
And soft, refreshing rain.

Refrain:
All good gifts around us
Are sent from heaven above;
Then thank the Lord,
O thank the Lord,
For all his love.

He only is the maker
Of all things near and far;
He paints the wayside flower,
He lights the evening star;
The winds and waves obey him,
By him the birds are fed;
Much more to us, his children,
He gives our daily bread.

Refrain

We thank thee then, O Father,
For all things bright and good,
The seed time and the harvest,
Our life, our health, our food.
Accept the gifts we offer
For all thy love imparts,
And what thou most desirest,
Our humble, thankful hearts.

Refrain

That’s a really nice thanksgiving hymn. Thanking God for sustaining the world and giving us all that we need. Robin has been singing this hymn (whenever he can) with the boys before bedtime for some time now. When he first started, the boys, especially Calvin was disinterested.  He would not learn to sing, let alone hum the tune.  I thought it might be too “adult” a hymn for him. But the husband thought otherwise.  He persevered.

And then. Last night, at story time, Calvin passed me the hymn book and wanted me to sing the hymn with him.  To my pleasant surprise, he began to sing the first line of the hymn! And, in the correct tune.  I continued to sing and the boy just followed — trying his best to sing the words.  As for Mr A, don’t ever underestimate him.  He sang with us too.  Well, he managed the last syllabus of each line. 🙂

I am actually glad that Robin persevered with the singing. Calvin might not seem to be interested initially, but he was surely absorbing and learning the tune as well as the lyrics whether he was aware of it or not. I believe it is the same for Athan.

What more? This hymn ties in with the children catechism that we have been trying to teach the boys, in particular, God make all things.

Sunshine In The Middle Of Winter.

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

We had heavy rain for a straight few days and then came a few days of wonderful sunny days. The best place to be was of course outdoors.

We brought the boys to a nearby park.  Calvin was exceptionally happy because he’s on school holidays at the moment and has been dying to go out. He seemed to miss his kindy class and playing with his friends. Athan was very happy too.

We had lunch ….

and then Calvin said he wanted to run on the grass. Athan joined him.

They ended up picking up sticks/dried branches on the lawn and then ….

they had a “duel”. How fun. They sure know how to entertain themselves. Robin and I just sat on our picnic rug and watched them while enjoying our cup of tea.

Here are my boys.  Cool eh?

I asked for a smile and this is what I get :

Well, at least one of them showed a smile. 🙂

On Calvin’s Concept Of Height.

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

One morning while the boys were having breakfast at the dining table and Robin and I were standing around the kitchen bench, Calvin made this observation:

Calvin: Papa, you are very tall.

Robin: Yup.

Calvin: Mama, you are a little short.

Me: So, who is the shortest?

Calvin: Didi (Athan).

Me: What about you?

Calvin: I am a little bit tall. (grinning away)

By the way, he is never short, only a little bit tall! 🙂

July Already!

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

It’s been a while since I have time for this space.  I have been very busy over the last few weeks, especially those days leading towards the end of June — end of financial year.  I was working almost every night trying to finish up reports, papers, annual performance review etc.  I was really tired, but thank God that the boys were well and Robin was helping heaps with everything.   He was supportive and understanding.  Things have slowed down a little since the last day of June, and so I am back!

Just want to share a little prayer that my almost 5 year old boy prayed this evening before going to bed:

“Dear God, thank you for my papa, mama and didi(Athan). Please help my mama to drive well. Help her to get to work not too late because it is not good. Please don’t send the rain because it is wet and dark and we can’t see anything. In Jesus’ name we pray Amen”.

That’s it.

I thanked my little boy and he said “you are very welcome, mama!”

I just smiled and I felt so blessed all of a sudden by this boy.  Thank God for Calvin.

As you can tell, we tend to be late to get out of the door each morning(especially on his kindy days), and I always tell him it is not good to be late. And, it has been raining quite heavily of late.  He has noticed the squally wind, dark sky and very wet ground and cars on headlights in the morning.  He is concerned with my driving as I always tell him on days like these that I need to concentrate on the road and so he has to be very quiet.  He knows and understands.

On another occasion, Calvin was dressed in his new sweater which he happened to like very much.  He thanked me saying: ” thank you mama for buying new clothes for me.”  I jokingly replied that I buy all the nice clothes for him and Athan and nothing for myself.  To which my little guy replied: ” I like your top too, mum, it’s nice”.  Sweet ya?
