Where Is He Going?

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

The other day, Robin showed me this very interesting photo of Athan. We really wondered where he was going!

If you look closely at the photo, you will see that he is holding his bib on his left hand while he has a bucket and his day care bag on his right shoulder! And, on his feet, he is wearing my shoes.  I was told he even waved goodbye to his dad before he took off! How interesting.

The other day, I found him playing by himself and talking to his teddy.  At some point, he sounded like he was scolding the teddy bear and he sounded like *ahem* me!  I just stood at a distance and watched him play.  Priceless moment.

I am also pleased to say that Athan has stopped crying when we leave him at his day care centre.  For the last 3 weeks, he did not cry or made a sound when we left him to his carers.  There was a serious look on his face before we left, but after that he was fine.  He is always happy playing when  I pick him up at the end of the day.  He even tells me “di mei you ku de” (athan didn’t cry) in the car on the way home. I think my little guy has found his place in the centre now and he is starting to feel secure.  I know there will be days when he will cry again, but I also know that he will get over it.

Wedding.

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Last Sunday, we attended a very beautiful and joyous wedding.  It was David and Jess’s wedding.

We have known David for a number of years, dating back to those OCF (Overseas Christian Fellowship) days when I was still in university.  David has somewhat been a special friend to us in that we have *watched* him grow during all these years.  I have even served in the same committee as him!  It was such an honour to be able to attend his wedding and to get to know his beautiful bride.

The wedding has brought together many many friends, especially those from OCF.  I had the chance to catch up with many of the friends whom I have not met in a very long time. It was so good.  The ceremony was very meaningful — the couple put a lot of thought to the songs and bible verses, and the message was very good too. Robin and I have truly enjoyed the wedding.  As for our boys, they were with their grandma and that was also why we could enjoy ourselves!  Here’s the happy couple:

Here’s us with the happy couple:

May God bless both of them richly.

Calvin Talk.

Monday, April 20th, 2009

The conversation happened one day after school when Calvin was having his bath.

Calvin: There are 3 boys and 1 girl in my home.

Me: (washing his hair, and not really paying attention) OK.

Calvin: There’s papa, di di (Athan) and Calvin — 3 boys!

Me: What about the girl?

Calvin: That’s mama!

Me: Right.

Calvin: But we need 2 girls, ma ma!

Me: Huh?

Calvin: We need 2 ma ma! hahaha

Me: Where are you going to find another ma ma?

Calvin: We can buy it in the supermarket!

Me: (trying very hard not to laugh) You really want to have 2 mums?

Calvin: Yes.

Me: You want 2 mums to discipline you?

Calvin: No! No! One ma ma is enough! I like my ma ma!

 How sweet. 🙂

Later I found out that Calvin has been learning about family in school …..

Back To Normal.

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

I am pleased to annouce that Calvin has fully recovered from his gastro bug! He has been eating his normal portion at meal times and he has been playing very well. I am so relieved.  Athan is fine too. Thank God.

The 2 boys were separated at bedtime for the last few days in our attempt to stop the gastro bug from getting to Athan.  Athan kept asking to sleep with his brother.  Now that his “gor gor” is fine, they are allowed to play together and he was so happy.  So, he wanted to nap with Calvin — together in Calvin’s bed!

It all started very nicely with both boys lying down ….. (yup, Calvin still sucks his finger when he goes to sleep!).  I was just waiting outside the room to see how long this could last. Within less than 5 minutes, this is what happened:

They are definitely not ready to share the same bed. It was cute though, to see 2 of them missing each other over the last few days. 🙂

The Long Weekend.

Monday, April 13th, 2009

Over here, we have a long weekend over Easter, meaning, the Monday after Good Friday is also a public holiday for us.  What more, it is school holidays for all the students too.  Calvin is off school for a good 2 weeks.

We had several activities lined up over the Easter long weekend — one of which was a  birthday party and the other was a dinner invitation.  We did not make it to either activities. Calvin was sick.

The boy started to throw up at around 2.30am on Saturday morning.  Not only did he throw up, he also complained of a headache.  He looked really sick.  The vomiting was happening at every half hour which meant he was not able to keep any liquid down and that also meant that he could not sleep at all.  I suspected he had gastro, but the headache made things a little more worrying.  I rang a health line and was advised to bring Calvin to see a doctor if his vomiting did not stop within 4 hours.  It did not.  So I took the boy to the children’s hospital at 6.30am while Robin stayed home with Athan.

Again (Calvin went to the hospital before when he was younger due a dislocated elbow), the hospital staff impressed us with both their skills and care.  They are really really good at what they do.  Anyway, the doctor confirmed that Calvin had gastro.  He then started Calvin on gastrolyte drink (green) every 10 minutes and I had to record if he vomited etc. Calvin hated the drink and he was still throwing up every half hour.  He was so tired but could not sleep.  Poor boy.  I was relieved in some ways, to know that it was gastro he had, not something about his head! Apparently, the headache was due to dehydration. And, we were told that the hospital has already seen numerous cases of gastro!  The bug had come early this year.

More and more kids turned up at the hospital with different problems as the time passed by, and it was really noisy.  Calvin requested to go home and the doctor agreed.  We went home after spending about 2 hours at the hospital.  The interesting thing was that Calvin remembered we were supposed to go to a birthday party that morning and he said he wanted to go!  And, he said he won’t eat too much so that he won’t puke! How innocent.

Anyway. The vomiting stopped by late afternoon on Saturday and he had no other symptoms.  Thank God! Mr Athan seemed to have been spared from the bug for now.  Gastro (gastroenteritis) is a very common childhood illness and it is very contagious.  We tried to keep Calvin away from other kids and his brother for a few days, and so we were stuck at home the whole long weekend.

Easter.

Friday, April 10th, 2009

Just want to share 2 bible verses that mean a lot to me, especially during this Easter time.

 1 Timothy 1:5

Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst.

Romans 8:32

He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?

Wishing all our friends and family a blessed Easter. God bless.

Afternoon Tea At Kindy.

Monday, April 6th, 2009

This afternoon, I went to a afternoon tea at Calvin’s kindy.  I have to say I had a very enjoyable time there.

The parents were all invited to afternoon tea for a very special reason.  Well, to celebrate end of term 1! Yay! How time flies, it has been 10 weeks of school for Calvin already. The weather was perfect for a afternoon tea outdoors — where the children played.  All the food was prepared by the children!  I was impressed.  There were pikelets (little pancakes) spread with butter, fairy sandwiches, scones and biscuits.  The children were even asked to serve us with tea or coffee!

Calvin was so eager to show me his class and the play area.  He brought me around the place and pointed out everything to me like I was a tourist. 🙂 I just followed him.  I was only allowed t sit and eat after the *guided tour*.

I also have very nice chats with a few of the mums.  It was such a nice opportunity to get to know  them.  The turnout was great and I was so glad I went. After the food, we went into the classroom.  The school principal came and said a few words to us — reinforcing that kindy education is important and how he was impressed that the kids have already set into a routine and able to listen and follow instructions.  The teacher also gave a little speech where she shared that the children had no problems adjusting socially and in the classroom.  She has also written comments for each child as well as left a section for us to give her feedback.  After that, the children presented 3 songs to us and then they were handed their folio which contained all the work that they have done and learn in the last 10 weeks.  I looked through the folio with Calvin and I was very very proud of my little boy.  He has indeed improved in many areas and I know that his teachers have done a great job with him.

The only thing that I regret was that I forgot to bring my camera!

Backyard Project.

Saturday, April 4th, 2009

The other day Robin bought a few packets of seeds from a local gardening store. He was planning to plant some herbs in our backyard.  Fact is, we have tried planting herbs and actually succeeded. 🙂 BUT we were not good at harvesting the herbs and taking care of them for a longer period.  The herbs always ended up neglected and then they dried up … 🙁 So, we plan to start all over again, and this time the boys are involved!

Calvin was involved in adding potting mix into the pots as well as putting the seeds at designated holes. I think he enjoyed the planting process as well as being able to spend time with his dad.  And then, the 2 boys were then given the task of watering the seeds everyday.

Athan has been pretty good at watering — check out the picture above.  He much prefers to handle the adult-size watering can that is as big as he is, than that of his own size. *sigh* I think Calvin is doing a pretty good job too.  Right now, they are eagerly waiting to see new shoots coming out of the seeds.  They actually think that the more water they feed the seeds, the faster they will grow.  They literally pour all the water they have into the pots and squat down to watch the seeds closely as if something magical is going to happen. 🙂 How cute.

I really hope the boys will learn something from our little backyard project, and that we will be better at handling the herbs (if they do grow).  I shall endeavour to report the growth of our herb garden when something does happen.

Sick.

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

There is definitely a flu bug going around ….. lots of people that I know of are currently down with coughs and colds. Yikes! Our own Mr A happens to be one of the victims, unfortunately.

He had a runny nose for a few days last week and then on Monday evening, he began to develop a fever and a even more runny nose.  His appetite dropped at dinner and was rather cranky for a while.  By the next morning, he had *sticky* eye.  Yup, eye infection.  Robin brought him to the GP and was given a script for a anti-biotic eye drop. It has been a HUGE struggle for us to try to put the eye drop into Athan’s eyes.  He screamed very loudly and shut his so tightly that it was near impossible to peel open it. Robin had to hold him down while I tried to get a drop into each eye.  It is all about timing.  I should also add that we sprayed a saline based solution into Athan’s nose to help unblock his blocked nose. The boy screamed like there’s no tomorrow.  Well, who can blame him? It must be so horrifying for him to have the eye drops followed by a nasal spray!  I really felt sorry for the boy, but we have to administer the treatments to help him get better. There has been some night waking too, due to blocked nose and dry throat. Poor fellow.

Today seemed to be a better day for Athan.  The fever seems to have gone and his nose is not runny any more.  His eyes have cleared up beautifully too. He is much happier, so are we.
