Five!

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

Our dear Mr Calvin turned 5 yesterday! He is now a *big* kindy boy going onto pre-primary next year. Sometimes I just can’t believe (or maybe don’t want to :)) my little boy is already in school and he is 5 years old now.

He is definitely a lot more chatty these days and even at school, I have been told that he has come out of his shell — which means he is very comfortable with his teachers and classmates AND he is very chatty. The one thing I have found is that Calvin is now conversing a lot more confidently in English. He is also speaking a lot more in English whether at home or out.  This can be a good thing, but the speaking Mandarin rule at our home seems to be out of the window at the moment for him.  I find it hard sometimes to get him to speak Mandarin –perhaps attending a Chinese school (once a week) might help? Well, the plan is to still keep speaking Mandarin to him.

Celebrations this year has been really really low key as compared to last year.  It is more of a family affair this year. Yup, I am slack! Anyhow, the boy was happy enough to have our company.  I gave him a choice of going to the zoo or watching a movie.  He chose the latter.  And guess what?  The husband announced early in the morning that we were going to the beach! This, of course was a surprise which has created a lot of excitement for the boys.

It was a windy and sunny day at the beach. Several families were there when we arrived.  As it was still too cold to go down to the water for a dip, we restricted the boys to playing with sand and only dipping feet in the water. Guess who did not listen to instructions?  Who else but our Mr A!

Here’s the very happy birthday boy.

The boys ran towards the water and when the waves rolled in, they ran back ….. they just ran back and forth and back and forth ….. I just sat there and watched them and took pictures. 🙂 The husband was with them  the whole time, supervising them. At one stage, they wanted to build a sand castle, but it proved too difficult when we did not bring any *tools* with us.  And so, the *genius* father suggested they dig a hole and made a tunnel for the water to flow in.  That sounded interesting enough for the boys and they began to dig.

The boys and Robin digging hole in the sand.

We left the beach after about an hour of play.  The boys had a such a fantastic time building the tunnel with their dad and watching the water flow in.  Athan was, as usual, reluctant to leave.  He simply loved the beach. He was soaking wet with water and sand from head to toe at the end of it.  He did not mind a least bit while I was concerned with the cleaning up afterward. *sigh*

After a quick clean up, it was lunch time. We proceeded to a nearby restaurant for our meal.  We had the most scrumptious (and expensive) lunch of fettuccine with meatballs and grilled flatbread.  Calvin wiped out his big share of lunch in no time. He was looking around for more food!

Even Mr Athan, who is not a big fan of pasta, cleaned his plate without much fuss. He must be very  hungry after all that running around on the beach earlier.

I just loved how the boys ate today — sat nicely on their chair and finished their food without a fuss. 🙂 We hardly eat out during lunch time, let alone at the beach. And so, this experience has been such a rare and pleasant for all of us.

What’s next? Ice cream of course!

The boys enjoying ice-cream after lunch.

On our way home from the beach, Calvin did not forget to remind about the movie!!! Gosh, this boy really does have a superb memory for things that he matters to him. He wanted to watch “Astro Boy”. Athan echoed Calvin’s reminder to which I replied “we will go only after your nap!”. Promise is a promise. I have to keep to my word to set a good example.

Yup, we made it to “Astro Boy”, the movie. Calvin was so engrossed throughout the whole movie.  He hardly moved in his seat apart from the occasional chuckle from some jokes in the movie.  He was really enjoying the movie. Athan, on the other hand lose interest half-way through the movie.  I had to bribed him with biscuits to keep him in his seat.  *sigh*. After the movie, Calvin asked me tons of questions about Astro Boy and when he was satisfied with my answers, he said to me “mum, it was a good promise”. He meant to say, it was good that I kept my promise. He really appreciated it.

What a good day we had spending together as a family, celebrating Calvin’s birthday. The boy was very happy and thankful and that’s all that mattered. Thank God for blessing us with Calvin.

Oh, I forgot to add that we also received a huge parcel from my family in Singapore! They have sent many gifts for Calvin as well as Athan.  They are so blessed.  Thank you everyone!

Calvin’s First Sports Day.

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Children marching into the school oval with their teachers, getting ready for the sports day.

Calvin had his very first sports day at school this morning.  The early childhood education teachers (for 4 and 5 year olds) have done such a fantastic job in organising this event and training the young children to run, skip, jump and hop (for the last 2 months)! These big motor skills were supposed to help them develop into bright healthy children. There were also races that involved lots of focusing such as the side step and egg and spoon race. Calvin has not been confident with skipping all this while — I was told yesterday by Mrs D.  The boy refused to do it unless the teacher hold his hand and guide him along. I am thankful to his teacher for willing to go this far to encourage him.

Mrs S holding Calvin’s hand to guide him through the skipping race.

The teachers have also been emphasising to the children that the sports day is not about coming in first, it is all about having fun, trying hard and finishing the tasks. Being the nervous mum that I am, I have also been repeating this to Calvin for the past week to prepare him mentally that winning is not important.  I was especially concerned as this boy has been showing his competitiveness side lately.  Well, good news is that there was no tears today. 🙂

I took today off from work just so that I can attend my little boy’s very first sports day. I am so glad that I did. I even volunteered to help at one of the tabloid games station — Sack Jumping.

The day started with the children going through 10 tabloid game stations.  There were soccer goals, sack jumping, flags etc.  Ten groups of children of size about six each rotated through the stations.  The action started with a blow of a whistle and ended with another whistle blow.  The school principal was the whistle blower.  He was very  involved with today’s events — cheering the kids on, hosting the events etc.  It was good of him to take time off to support the early childhood education program. I think the parents appreciated his efforts, including myself of course.

Calvin in action: Left: Sack Jumping. Right: Running.

At my station, the children were divided into 2 teams. I handled one team while another parent handled the other. Each child from the team took turns to put on the sack, pull up the handles and hop like a kangaroo to a cone, go round it and return to the team. It was tough, I have to say. Most of the children could do the action very well, while some refused to hop and some just gave up … well, we were dealing with 4-5 year olds you see and they had their moments. Lots of encouragement and reassurance helped.

The children went back to their classrooms after the games for a break and morning tea break.  They have done such a good job in listening and following instructions. Traditional races were next.

The children returned to the oval after a well deserved break.  They were lined up in rows behind marked lines on the lawn. The race started with running. I was at the finishing point watching my little boy and his moment of pride. He ran really really fast towards the finishing line and me! I was so proud of him.  He was concerned he did not come in first, and so I reminded him that it did not matter and that he was really fast. That seemed to have made him happy. All the children were given ribbons that were pinned onto their shirt when they finished the tasks required, no matter how long they took to complete the tasks.  This really encouraged the children for the effort that they have put in. I find this very encouraging and positive.

This is the friends race where they held hands with a friend and run together to the finishing line.

After the children have completed their races, the siblings finally had their turn to race! Well, our Mr Athan was in day care today and so he missed out. I am sure he would enjoy the race. There was also a 3-legged race for the parents!! Of course I took part. 🙂 As Robin did not come due to work, I partnered with a friend. No, we did not win, but we had a lot of fun. Calvin watched me and cheered me on, and he told me “mum, you did not win”. To which I replied, “it is OK because I had fun”.

Here’s the happy boy with all the ribbons he has achieved pinned on his shirt.

The sports day was declared a success by the principal! He reiterated the importance of early childhood education and the importance of having sports program integrated into it. He thanked the teachers and parents and children after which we were all invited to a hotdog lunch. Calvin was starving by then, he could hardly wait for another moment to receive his hotdog and roll. He even ate my share! After lunch, he even had energy to play with his friends at the playground. Amazing. I was exhausted by then!

A surprise awaited Calvin after we left school. The husband met up with us and brought us to a ice-cream place for a treat! Calvin could not wait to tell his dad all about his ribbons and how fast he ran. The father could not be any more proud and happy to see his boy so excited about his achievements.

What a nice way to end the day!

While I Was Away …

Monday, October 19th, 2009

An opportunity somehow arose today for me to have a brief chat with Calvin’s teacher at school.  Mrs D asked how my trip to Sydney was! Why the exclamation mark?  Well, I was surprised that the teacher knew I was away in Sydney.  Apparently Mr Calvin has told all his teachers and friends this morning that I was away in Sydney last week and his mummy is back now. He even told them I bought donut with chocolate and sprinkle on it for him and his brother! I am not sure what else he has told his teachers about me ….. haha :)  Mrs D told me that Calvin was pretty upset last Thursday (first day of school after school holiday) at school and he kept telling his teachers his mummy was still not home yet.  He was a bit down ….. 🙁 And, he was happy as usual today. :)  Mrs D also told me that Calvin has become very sociable and chatty lately as compared to the first couple of terms at school when he was very quiet.  I have to thank her and the other teachers for being so encouraging to Calvin, making his experience at school very positive.

I did not realise the effect of my absence on the boys, especially Calvin until today.  I thought they would be fine with their dad and grandma.  They were fine.  However, they are also very used to having me with them everyday and so I guess they can feel the difference when I am not around.  Robin has also told me that Calvin’s behaviour has somewhat become more teary and whiney …. not sure if this has anything to do with my trip as children always go through different phases.  Anyhow, we still have to be there for him and correct his behaviour when necessary.

As for Mr A, he is his usual happy chatty self.  I had the morning with him today and I totally enjoyed it.  We had a gym class and did some groceries at the supermarket. I totally enjoyed my time with this little fellow.  I really wish, if I can, that he won’t grow up too quickly! Not sure if this is possible. 🙂

Quick Word.

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

A quick post to say that the long silence in this space is due to me being away on a work trip to Sydney this week.  The work, both at home and office that was needed to to be done before the trip took up all my time and hence the silence here.  I have now returned from the trip and am so glad to be home with my boys! Looking forward to telling stories here again ….

Little Helpers — younger days.

Monday, October 5th, 2009

I was looking through our photo archive last night and found some very cute pictures of the boys helping out with gardening. They enjoyed doing that since when they were young. Athan loved to imitate adults and handle adult size equipments. Here are a couple of the photos:

Athan looked so chubby and short in the photos!  His legs were fat and short. 🙂 He was only 20 months old (still wearing a bib and drooling profusely) in the photos and Calvin has just turned 4.  Hopefully, the boys will enjoy gardening when they grow up. It’s good for them.

Two Fun-Filled Days.

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009

We had 2 consecutive days of outing with the boys.  First was a play date/ social outing that I organised for my mother’s group at a park and  the other was a three-year-old birthday party.

The outing at the park was fantastic. The kids had a blast at the playground area and the adults had a chance to catch up and talk.  There was also a pond where the ducks live.  The kids were so excited to see the ducks come towards them for a feed — well, they each had a slice of bread in their hand! Even the seagulls came looking for a feed! Here are a few photos of the boys ….

We had a picnic lunch at the park before we said goodbye to each other.  The boys were happy and tired at the end of the play time.  They had each collected “treasures” in their pockets to show their dad too!  Well, Calvin found a nice piece of rock and a shell and some *spikey looking nuts* from the tree while Athan found a handful of  the *spikey looking nuts* …. they were so proud and could not wait to get home to show their father. They were talking about their *treasures* all the way home in the car. 🙂 Cute.

Today, we attended a 3-year-old girl birthday party. We knew the family from church and mother’s group and so the kids know each other pretty well. And, the invited guests were mostly from church and from our mum’s group too! Again, the kids had a ball playing with each other. Athan was *hooked* to this little bike that he found.  He even won the car race (party game) he had with his peers!  Calvin was playing with the older kids and he did not win the car race. The boy was soooooo disappointed. He wanted so badly to win and was tearing when he did not.  He has been showing his competitiveness of late and does not seem to be able to handle a defeat well.  I am still working on this.  Well, one school of thought is that it is good to be competitive and when he grows older he will learn how to control himself more.  I need to keep teaching him the right way to manage defeat. But, the boy was quickly settled after having some cake.  🙂

I have to say the party was very organised.  Many parents were impressed, including me of course.  All the kids had fun and the birthday girl had fun — that’s the most important.  Didn’t manage to capture many moments during the party as I was busy watching out for Athan and talking to other parents . :)  Here are a couple of photos I took of the boys :

The party ended with a little treasure hunt where the kids each had to find a balloon that has a lolly bag tied to it.  Everyone wins in this game! What a great idea.

I think I need a break from outings for a while — BUT the boys are already asking where they will be going tomorrow!
