Top Ten Favourite Words.

Here’s Calvin’s top ten favourite English words (and short sentences) in no particular order:

  1. Why
  2. What’s this
  3. What’s that sound
  4. No
  5. Wait
  6. Not now
  7. This mine
  8. Can you help me please
  9. I don’t like it
  10. I want eat something

These days, the boy has been asking endless of “whys”. The questioning usually starts from a genuine curiosity and it often leads to no where. Here’s a classic example:

Calvin: ma ma, why is this not open? (pointing to the shop)

Me: because it is still early.

Calvin: why is it still early?

Me: because it is only 8 o’clock in the morning.

Calvin: why is it only 8 o’clock in the morning?

Me: because that’s the time now.

Calvin: why is it that’s the time now?

………..

As you can see, this conversation is leading to no where and he is just asking “why” for the sake of asking. This asking “why” business is a phase that he is going through (he is always going through phases) and I have decided to be patient and answer his “whys” as best as I can because I think questioning can be a good way to learn.
